A little history on the "Drift Bag".........

Drift SockDrift bags are used for multiple purposes including:

  • Slowing your boat
  • Positioning your boat
  • Stabilizing your boat

One of the time-tested devices in the fishing industry today is the drift bag. Being able to significantly add to the numbers of fish caught under some of the worst fishing conditions is truly a remarkable feat.

When were drift bags first used?
The first drift bags – or sea anchors – were used hundreds of years ago to either slow ships coming into harbor or to hold the bow of the boat into the wind during stormy conditions. Beginning in the 1960s, walleye fishermen began using small drift bags to slow their boats. This technique originated in the Dakotas shortly after the Missouri River reservoirs were created. The strong winds meant that something was needed to slow a boat in order for live bait presentations to work and hold the boat in a relatively fixed position. There were few other ways to fish in those days. The use of drift bags in the 1960s was difficult at best because most were homemade using bulky canvas. Some fishermen would even resort to using a pail with holes in the bottom!

How have things changed?
Throughout the years, boats have changed. They are bigger…much bigger! There are hundreds of options available to the angler to deal with just about any condition, not to mention a countless variety of baits and techniques. One thing that hasn’t changed is the wind and the effect it has on your boat. Drift bags are still an essential tool in anyone’s boat because they can literally rescue a fishing trip from bad weather and result in a successful catch at the end of the day.

What have been the limitations of traditional drift bags?
Many articles have been written over the years pointing out the benefits of these important cones of fabric. Little information has been given about the many problems faced in using traditional drift bags. Wind, waves, and the current can cause a fisherman to come up with all kinds of different terms (some not too positive) in describing these things called drift bags. Typically, they have been a hassle to use – bags that don’t deploy, spinning of the bags that create tangles, air that gets trapped inside or under the bag causing it to collapse often resulting in the drift bags sinking. If a bag breaks loose, all you can do is watch it sink to the bottom of the lake.

Wave Tamer Drift Bag

Which brand is best?
Tamer has engineered what has proven to be the most advanced design made to deal with the problems that have been associated with the use of other drift bags – The Wave Tamer. The Wave Tamer features a patented new design from the traditional floating drift bag resulting in a product much more effective than the original drift bags seen hundreds of years ago. For example, several ounces of weight added to the bottom straps instantly submerge the bottom of the bag, allowing water to flow into it immediately, regardless of wind or wave action. The top two straps are shorter, allowing the bottom of the bag to sink before the bottom straps become tight – giving the bag a digging action in the water. The Wave Tamer drift bag is made from the highest quality marine materials available today; this guarantees your investment will last for years. It is the only self-deploying drift bag on the market.

How has the Wave Tamer eliminated limitations of other drift bags?
The innovative Wave Tamer has proven that drift bags don’t have to be a hassle to use.

  • The Wave Tamer deploys with ease. A semi-rigid spring opening forces the mouth of the Wave Tamer wide open while a top vent allows trapped air to escape. On the top, a long float partially holds the mouth of the bag open, plus it keeps the bag on the surface where it belongs.
  • The Wave Tamer will not spin. This eliminates unwanted tangles and unwanted headaches for the fisherman!
  • High quality materials assure that the Wave Tamer will not collapse.
  • The WAVE TAMER floats! This allows you to use your drift bag any distance from your boat, keeping it out of the way when fighting a fish.
  • The Wave Tamer was engineered to deal with the complex problems of today’s larger boats. Don’t be fooled with other drift bags. There is a huge difference in sizes, quality and function.
  • Tamer stands by the quality of the Wave Tamer with a five-year guarantee, taking the risk completely out of purchasing this innovative product.

At Tamer Group, we believe you go to the lake to fish, not to struggle with weather conditions or equipment. Other drift bags on the market today cannot compare with the effectiveness of the Wave Tamer. Try the Wave Tamer today and start fishing (and relaxing) tomorrow – we guarantee it!

Genz on Spoons

Fish slow down in cold water and a slow approach is often needed to catch them in the dead of winter.

But, it’s a different story at first ice or just before ice out, according to Dave Genz,…
