How do I know I am choosing the right drift bag?

Ask yourself these questions:

Do I want to use the drift bag for...

  • drift fishing - slowing my boat in the wind?
  • trolling - reducing boat speed when trolling?
  • holding my boat steady when anchored or in the current?
  • safety - holding my bow to the wind in case of a storm?
  • Stabilizing – making my bass boat more stable so I can cast accurately

These are some of the ways a drift bag can be used. Most of the uses mentioned above demand that your drift bag float. The Wave Tamer does!

Also, choosing the right size as well as the right brand is vital to your success. The Wave Tamer line of drift bags was developed to handle it all. Seldom will one size drift bag do it all so here are some guidelines to go by...

No two boats are set up the same, some trial and error may be needed to perfect a certain technique.

Boat size is only one part of the equation, weather and water conditions should also be considered. There is a huge difference in a 15 mph wind versus a 25 mph wind. This is why Wave Tamer drift bags are made in so many sizes to cover most of your boat control needs.

No other drift bag is as functional and durable as the Wave Tamer Floating Drift Bag.

Note:
• These recommendations can vary by boat model features (for example - windshields), fiberglass or aluminum, and by weather conditions.
• The above is recommended for winds up to 25 mph. For extreme conditions, add a 2nd bag of the same size or smaller.
• Time of year and water temps also play a role in desired speed. A simple rule of thumb is slow down in cold water.
• Remember, it takes speed to create drag when using a small drift bag. If you want to move slowly, increase the size of the drift bag.
• Trolling bag sizes - for small boats and engines 100 hp and below, we recommend one or two 30" Wave Tamers. For larger boats and engines above 100 hp, we recommend one or two 40" Wave Tamers. Two 40’s work great for pontoons!

No one knows your boat better than you do, these recommendations are simply compiled through literally thousands of hours of testing and research, and we’re here to help you get the best control possible!

Here are some guidelines for choosing the right Wave Tamer for your fishing and boating needs offshore.

Keep in mind a Wave Tamer drift bag or it’s also called a sea anchor has 3 functions:

1. Slows your boat
2. Positions your boat
3. Stabilizes your boat

There seems to be 2 main techniques that offshore fishermen are using Wave Tamers to help them with. They are first correcting the drift angles that windy conditions cause. Most boats have a tendency to drift bow down wind. This can be corrected to a beam to the wind drift by deploying a Wave Tamer from the bow of your boat.

The chart will give you a good starting point based on the size of your boat. Keep in mind that no two boats will respond the same. Weight, numbers of outboards, weight placement, materials and features all have an effect as to the size and location of your Wave Tamer. Some other conditions include wind speed and direction or current. Any time one or any combinations of these conditions are occurring at the same time different Wave Tamers or additional Wave Tamers may be needed to accomplish what you are trying to do. Seldom have we encountered conditions that we could not overcome with some trail and error. So practice using your Wave Tamers under different conditions and you will be pleasantly surprised what you will be able to do. Properly placed and sized you can make your boat drift sideways, forward, backwards, bow to the wind, stern to the wind or anchor in a location.

One last thought is to keep in mind that it takes speed to create resistance or drag. If your goal is to both slow and position your boat at the same time a larger Wave Tamer will be needed or two of a smaller size. Two Wave Tamers give you options you will never enjoy with one. The name of the game is practice, your boat will tell you what it needs based on conditions that day and no one knows your boat better than you.

The larger the Wave Tamer the slower you go. If you are looking to slow as much as possible use the 9’, 11’ or 14’ sea anchors for your added convenience and value. The vent end of the Wave Tamer is adjustable to increase or decrease the drag. Also the Wave Tamers float allowing you to get them away from your boat so they are out of the way.

Because the rope angle is different than other drift bags they will not hold your bow down in rough water lessening the chance of having a wave wash over your bow.

Genz on Spoons

Fish slow down in cold water and a slow approach is often needed to catch them in the dead of winter.

But, it’s a different story at first ice or just before ice out, according to Dave Genz,…
